lyrics

Flashes in the Mirror of Us (2022)

There’s a staggering distance in your eyes and through that distance passes the ocean between us. We swim and tread furiously there, two castaways torn together and apart by the savage currents and cruel, raging riptides.

We can see each other intermittently through all the waves and choppy surf, but we are so deliriously tired that neither of us can be certain if we are truly there, bobbing up and down like dueling driftwood or two corks in a flooded sink.

I see you in brilliant flashes like an old-fashioned camera in a dark room or lightning striking in the night over storm waters.

The bulb shatters.
The thunder cracks and echoes.
The sound is menacing, but it needs to be.
There are always flashes in the mirror of us.

There’s a crooked sadness in your smile, something cracked and beautiful and fragile and numb, something poetic.

Everything, …
Everything that I find beautiful about the world is manifested in you.

The things I love about you: the way you wear your t-shirts, your porcelain skin and jet-black hair.

You don’t take yourself too seriously, but you care very deeply about people, about who and what they are—their thoughts and fears and troubles.

There is something so entirely comfortable and exciting about your presence, something vaguely familiar like a phantom phrase from the memory of a forgotten dream.

And even if it all overtakes us and we aren’t able to rise above the bullshit, even if the world wins and we never manage to get our shit together and live the lives we deserve,

I will always value that.
I will always value you.
